Etterspørselsstyrte, often translated as demand-driven, refers to a production and inventory strategy where the manufacturing or procurement of goods is directly linked to actual customer orders or sales forecasts. This contrasts with traditional push systems, where goods are produced based on anticipated demand and stocked in anticipation of sales. In a demand-driven system, materials are released and production is initiated only when a customer order is received or when inventory levels fall below a predetermined reorder point, signaling a need to replenish stock.

The core principle of demand-driven manufacturing is to minimize inventory holding costs and reduce waste associated with overproduction. By synchronizing production with demand, companies can achieve greater responsiveness to market changes and customer preferences. This approach often involves implementing tools and methodologies such as Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems that are configured to react to demand signals, or more advanced approaches like Demand-Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP).
