Etenemäpolttoaine is a Finnish term that translates to "propellant" in English. It refers to any substance or mixture that, when subjected to combustion or other chemical reaction, produces a high volume of rapidly expanding gases. These gases are then expelled at high velocity through a nozzle, generating thrust in the opposite direction. This principle, known as Newton's third law of motion, is the fundamental basis for rocket propulsion.

Propellants can be broadly categorized into solid, liquid, and hybrid types.
