Estendersi

Estendersi is an Italian verb used primarily in its reflexive form to express the action of extending, spreading, or stretching out across space, time, or scope. It describes things that grow longer, wider, or more expansive, such as land, territories, bodies of water, networks, or influence.

Etymology and forms: Estendere (to extend) is the non-reflexive form; estendere derives from Latin extendere. Estendersi is the reflexive form and is conjugated as an -ere verb: io mi estendo, tu ti estendi, lui si estende, noi ci estendiamo, voi vi estendete, loro si estendono. The past participle is esteso and when used with the auxiliary essere, it agrees with the subject: si è esteso, si è estesa, etc.

Usage notes: The phrase si estende is used for geographic or figurative extension, such as "La regione si estende per centinaia di chilometri" (the region stretches for hundreds of kilometers) or "La reputazione si è estesa" (the reputation has spread). Estendersi tends to be preferred over stendersi when referring to landscapes, territories, networks, or influence, rather than to lying down.
