Espronceda, José de Espronceda y Delgado (1808–1842), is considered one of the leading figures of Spanish Romanticism and a prominent voice in 19th-century Spanish literature. He was born in Almendralejo, Extremadura, and moved to Madrid to study law, where he soon became involved in liberal politics.
