Esmets

Esmets are a traditional Latvian and Lithuanian fermented beverage made from rye or barley malt. The drink is known for its slightly sweet, malty flavor and low alcohol content, typically ranging from 0.5% to 2%. It is often consumed as a refreshing, non-alcoholic or lightly alcoholic alternative to beer, particularly during summer festivals, weddings, and other celebrations.

The preparation of esmets involves a spontaneous fermentation process, similar to that of kvass or bogovitchi in other Slavic cultures. The malted grain is mixed with water, yeast, and sometimes fruits or herbs, then left to ferment naturally. The resulting beverage is carbonated, giving it a fizzy texture. In some regions, esmets may be flavored with honey, berries, or spices like cloves or cinnamon.

Historically, esmets was a popular drink among Baltic peasants due to its simplicity and affordability. It was often homemade, with families fermenting their own batches using locally available ingredients. Over time, commercial production emerged, particularly in Latvia, where it became a cultural symbol of national identity.
