Esivalinnat, literally “pre-selections” in Finnish, refer to internal processes within political parties or other organizations to narrow down or rank candidates before the official candidacy for elections. The aim is to identify individuals who best represent the party’s platform and who are most likely to win seats in upcoming elections, while engaging the party base.

Methods vary: some parties hold internal ballots among members, others use delegate conferences, committees of experts, or surveys of members and supporters. In some cases esivalinnat are informal consultations; in others they constitute formal ranked lists or decision milestones that influence the final candidate order on the party slate.

Legal status is typically non-binding; the final list of candidates is usually decided by a party organ such as a central committee or a party conference, and may be subject to electoral law, party bylaws, or negotiations with coalition partners. Esivalinnat can thus shape the pool of candidates without guaranteeing success.

In Finland and other countries, esivalinnat are part of internal party democracy debates. Proponents argue they improve candidate quality, increase member engagement, and provide transparency about selection; critics point to potential entrenchment of established figures, lack of equal access for outsiders, or opaque procedures.
