Esimerkein

Esimerkein is a Finnish phrase that translates roughly to “by means of examples” or “with examples.” It is used in educational, explanatory, and argumentative writing to introduce or accompany a set of illustrations that clarify a point, demonstrate a method, or compare options. The form combines the noun esimerkki (example) with a suffix that signals the use of examples as a means of demonstration.

In practice, esimerkein can begin a sentence or clause, for example: “Esimerkein osoitetaan, miten algoritmi toimii” (With examples, it is shown how the algorithm works). It may also appear mid-sentence in constructions such as “Tämä voidaan havainnollistaa esimerkein.” The expression is more common in written Finnish, particularly in textbooks, academic articles, and policy reports, where precise illustration is valuable.

Usage notes: Esimerkein provides a concise way to indicate that a discussion will be supported by concrete instances. It fits well with enumerations, comparisons, and explanatory sections. Because it is relatively formal, it is less common in everyday spoken language, but it remains a useful stylistic option in formal writing.
