It is commonly used in cooking and baking contexts to refer to an oven that has been brought to the desired temperature before food is placed inside. This is a crucial step in many recipes as it ensures even cooking and proper rising of baked goods.

The concept of preheating is based on the principle of thermal equilibrium. When an oven is preheated, the air inside reaches a stable, uniform temperature. Placing food into a cold oven would result in a much slower and uneven cooking process. For instance, in baking, a properly preheated oven allows yeast to activate quickly and the leavening agents to work efficiently, leading to a better texture and volume in bread and cakes.
