Escapementactie

Escapementactie, or escapement action, is a term used in horology, particularly in Dutch-language sources, to describe the action of the escapement mechanism in clocks and watches. The escapement is the interface between the gear train and the oscillator that regulates the release of energy to drive the timekeeping element.

The escapement action encompasses how the escape wheel, pallet or lever, and oscillator interact to produce a controlled impulse and to lock briefly during each cycle. In essence, the gear train transfers energy to the escapement, which then releases it in discrete steps to the oscillator (balance wheel or pendulum). The geometry, surface finish, and timing of the locking and impulse surfaces influence impulse magnitude, locking, and overall accuracy, wear, and isochronism.

Common escapement types discussed in horology include the lever escapement, anchor escapement, cylinder escapement, and detent escapement. Each type has distinctive locking angles, impulse distribution, and wear characteristics, which give rise to different performance profiles.
