Ernährungssouveränität

Ernährungssouveränität, translated as food sovereignty, is a political concept that describes the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. It emphasizes the importance of local control over food production and distribution, rather than reliance on global markets or corporate interests.

The concept emerged in the mid-1990s, gaining prominence with the formation of La Via Campesina, an international peasant movement. It advocates for the empowerment of smallholder farmers, indigenous communities, and agricultural workers, recognizing their crucial role in feeding the world. Food sovereignty prioritizes local economies and food systems, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and protect local biodiversity and traditional farming practices.

Key principles of food sovereignty include valuing food providers, prioritizing food for people, ending food speculation, ensuring access to land and resources, and promoting sustainable agriculture. It challenges the prevailing industrial food system, which is often criticized for its environmental impact, social inequities, and contribution to global hunger. Proponents argue that by placing control of food systems in the hands of local communities, food sovereignty can lead to more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food futures. It is seen as an alternative to food security, which can sometimes be achieved through means that undermine local food production and cultural traditions.
