Erhai

Erhai is a large freshwater lake located in Yunnan Province, China, near the city of Dali. The name Erhai literally translates to "sea of ears" in Chinese, referring to its crescent shape. It is the second-largest lake in Yunnan by surface area, after Dian Lake, and is a vital source of water for the local population, supporting agriculture and tourism.

The lake is situated at an elevation of 1,972 meters (6,470 feet) above sea level. Its drainage basin is relatively small, and its water level is influenced by rainfall and the flow of surrounding rivers, most notably the Miju River, which is its primary outlet. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the Cangshan Mountains to the west and the Yi people's residential areas to the east.

Erhai is renowned for its scenic beauty, featuring clear blue waters and often framed by the majestic Cangshan Mountains. This natural appeal has made it a significant tourist destination. The lake is also home to a diverse range of aquatic life, including various species of fish and birds, though it has faced environmental challenges in recent decades due to pollution and eutrophication. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore the lake's ecological health. The Bai ethnic minority, who have historically inhabited the region, have a deep cultural connection to Erhai, with their traditions and livelihoods often intertwined with the lake.
