Erftstadt

Erftstadt is a town in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It lies on the Erft river about 25 kilometers southwest of Cologne and is part of the Cologne metropolitan region. The municipality comprises several districts, including Lechenich, Liblar, Blessem, and Erp, as well as smaller villages. The area combines rural villages with suburban neighborhoods and green spaces along the Erft valley.

Erftstadt was formed in the late 20th century through the merger of several former municipalities as part of North Rhine-Westphalia’s municipal reform programme. The town is characterized by a historic town center in Lechenich, with traditional churches and houses, and by a number of contemporary residential areas.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy features services, retail, and light industry, with many residents commuting to Cologne or Bonn. The town is served by regional roads and is located near the A1 and A61 motorways. A regional rail line provides links to Cologne and surrounding towns, complemented by local bus networks.

Education and culture: Erftstadt offers several primary and secondary schools and recreational facilities. Cultural life centers on the historic districts, with markets, clubs, and events that reflect the area's municipal heritage.
