Etymologically, the name is said to come from the Eredet language, with ere meaning light and ditl meaning memory, though variants exist in parallel texts.

In most in-universe depictions, an eredetitl is a smooth, oval crystal about the size of a human palm. It is typically described as pale blue or colorless, with a shallow script etched around its circumference. The inscription, usually written in the Eredet script, is purported to encode a narrative fragment or a user’s memories.

Function and use within the lore describe the artifact as a memory-preserving device. Touching it can replay stored scenes, emotions, or senses, often requiring a ritual to initiate and conclude the experience. Access is typically restricted and mediated by priestly or scholarly authorities, and the crystal may deteriorate if misused.
