Erddig

Erddig is a historic country house and estate near Wrexham in north Wales. It is managed by the National Trust and is noted for its 18th-century house, extensive servants’ quarters, and social-history collections.

History: The estate has medieval origins and came into the Yorke family in the 17th century. The present house was built in the early 18th century, and the Yorkes kept the property for centuries before it was entrusted to the National Trust in the 20th century.

Architecture and interiors: The brick house is two stories with a classical façade. The service wing remains largely intact, housing kitchens, laundries, and other workspaces, with many original fittings in the family rooms.

Collections and social history: Erddig preserves a wide range of period furniture, paintings, textiles, and Yorke family possessions. An emphasis on daily life and the relationship between family and staff is supported by letters, ledgers, and household records.

Gardens and grounds: The estate includes a walled kitchen garden and parkland, with landscapes reflecting 18th- and 19th-century fashion designed to complement the house.

Public access: As a National Trust property, Erddig is open to visitors with guided and self-guided tours, a café, shop, and seasonal events.
