Epiteelisolu

Epiteelisolu, or epithelial cell, is a fundamental type of cell found in multicellular organisms, primarily serving as the main structural component of epithelial tissues. These tissues line the surfaces and cavities of the body, including the skin, digestive tract, respiratory tract, and blood vessels, as well as forming glands. Epithelial cells play critical roles in protection, absorption, secretion, sensation, and selective permeability.

The structure of epithelial cells is highly specialized to fulfill their functions. They are tightly packed together with minimal extracellular matrix between them, forming continuous sheets. The cells are anchored to a basement membrane, a thin, fibrous layer that separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue. Epithelial cells exhibit polarity, meaning they have distinct apical (exposed) and basal (attached) surfaces, which allows them to perform directional functions such as absorption or secretion.

Epithelial cells can be classified based on their shape and the number of cell layers present. Shapes include squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-like), and columnar (tall and column-shaped). They may also be arranged in simple (single layer) or stratified (multiple layers) layers. For example, simple squamous epithelium is found in areas requiring rapid diffusion, such as the alveoli of the lungs, while stratified squamous epithelium, like that in the skin, provides durable protection against abrasion.

These cells are also involved in various physiological processes, including the secretion of hormones and enzymes in glandular epithelial cells. Additionally, they contribute to immune defense by acting as a barrier against pathogens and participating in immune responses. The renewal and repair of epithelial tissues rely on stem cells within the epithelium, ensuring continuous function and integrity.
