Episodicity

Episodicity is the property of being organized as discrete episodes—distinct blocks of time or events with clear boundaries, settings, and agents. It contrasts with a continuous or unsegmented experience, in which components blend into a seamless flow. The concept is used across disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, and literary theory to describe how events and experiences are structured and recalled.

In cognitive psychology and neuroscience, episodicity is central to the study of episodic memory, a memory system for autobiographical events that specifies the what, where, and when of past experiences. Episodic memory enables mental time travel and is often contrasted with semantic memory, which stores general knowledge without tied to a specific time or place.
