Epifüüsealuse

Epifüüsealuse is a term used in medical contexts, particularly in radiology and orthopedics, to describe a pathological condition affecting the physis, also known as the epiphyseal plate or growth plate. The physis is a cartilaginous layer found in growing long bones, responsible for longitudinal bone growth. Epifüüsealuse refers to damage or abnormality within this specific region.

This condition can arise from various causes, including trauma, such as fractures that extend into the physis, or repetitive stress injuries. Infections can also affect the epiphyseal plate, leading to inflammation and damage. Certain genetic disorders and metabolic conditions can also predispose individuals to epifüüsealuse by compromising the integrity of the growth plate.

Radiographically, epifüüsealuse may manifest as widening of the physis, irregularity of the physeal margins, displacement of epiphyseal or metaphyseal fragments, or even premature closure of the growth plate. The clinical presentation varies depending on the underlying cause and the severity of the damage, but can include pain, swelling, limited range of motion, and in cases of premature closure, limb length discrepancy. Diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical examination and imaging studies, primarily X-rays. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause and minimizing long-term complications, such as growth disturbances.
