Ephemeralschlüssels, a term of German origin, translates roughly to "ephemeral key". In cryptography and computer security, it refers to a key that is intended for very short-term use. This concept is crucial for enhancing security in various applications where the risk associated with a compromised long-term key is deemed too high.

The primary characteristic of an ephemeralschlüssels is its limited lifespan. Once its purpose is fulfilled, or after a predetermined short period, the key is securely destroyed and can no longer be used. This is in contrast to static or long-term keys, which might remain in use for extended durations, increasing their exposure to potential attacks.
