Epämetyloidut

Epämetyloidut is a Finnish term that translates to "unmethylated" in English. In chemistry and biology, methylation is a process where a methyl group (CH3) is added to a molecule. Therefore, "unmethylated" refers to a molecule or a site on a molecule that has not undergone this process.

This concept is particularly relevant in the study of DNA and proteins. Unmethylated DNA, for instance, is a crucial factor in gene regulation. The methylation status of DNA, especially at cytosine bases in CpG dinucleotides, can control whether a gene is expressed or silenced. When DNA is unmethylated, genes are generally accessible for transcription and can be actively expressed. Conversely, methylation often leads to gene silencing.

In the context of proteins, unmethylation can also influence their function, stability, or interactions with other molecules.
