Entilj

Entilj is a small municipality located in the northern part of Slovenia within the Municipality of Ljutomer. The settlement sits at an elevation of approximately 242 metres above sea level, and covers a total area of roughly 5.3 square kilometres. According to the most recent census conducted in 2020, Entilj has a population of about 780 residents, with a slightly higher proportion of adults than children. The demographic structure is predominantly ethnic Slovene, with a small minority of Hungarian speakers reflecting the region’s historical ties to the Kingdom of Hungary.

Geographically, Entilj lies within the Pannonian Basin and features gently undulating hills, a mix of agricultural land and deciduous forest. The climate is classified as humid continental with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Agricultural activities form the backbone of the local economy; the area is known for its production of wheat, corn, and barley, as well as vineyards that produce local wine varieties such as Saura and Modra Ozega. In recent years, there has also been a modest increase in eco-tourism, with visitors drawn to the region’s natural beauty and rustic farm stays.

Historically, the earliest documented mention of Entilj dates back to the 12th century, where it appears in Roman Catholic land records under the name "Entiljan." Over the centuries, the settlement has been governed by a succession of feudal lords, then incorporated into the Habsburg Monarchy, later becoming part of Yugoslavia, and ultimately an independent Slovenian municipality after 1991. Architectural highlights include a baroque stone church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, built in 1753, and a 19th‑century village schoolhouse that now houses a local museum. Contemporary Entilj balances preservation of its rural heritage with gradual modernization, featuring a municipal council, primary schools, and community-oriented businesses that support local employment and cultural activities.
