Enteraaliset

Enteraaliset is a Finnish term used in medicine to describe aspects related to the enteral route of administration, i.e., delivering substances through the gastrointestinal tract. The word is formed from the prefix enter- (relating to the intestines) and the Finnish suffix -alinen/-aiset, which marks a plural adjective. In practice, enteraaliset refers to methods, devices, nutrients, and therapies that use the GI tract for administration.

The scope of enteraaliset encompasses both nutritional support and other substances given via enteral routes. Common examples include oral intake of food or supplements and tube-based methods such as nasogastric or orogastric feeding, gastrostomy or jejunostomy tubes, and ongoing administration of prescribed medications through these channels. Enteraaliset nutrition products are typically designed as liquid formulas tailored to various clinical needs, including energy and micronutrient requirements.

Clinical use of enteraaliset methods is guided by patient condition, GI tract functionality, and risk assessment. Benefits include preservation of gut integrity, reduced infection risk compared with some parenteral approaches, and the ability to deliver calories and nutrients at home or in hospital settings. Potential complications include aspiration, tube displacement, clogged or dislodged devices, and local irritation or infection at the access site.

In medical guidelines, enteraaliset care is often contrasted with parenteral (intravenous) nutrition and other non-enteral therapies.
