For example, someone might feel "enslaved" by a job that is highly demanding and poorly compensated, trapping them in a cycle of work without the freedom to pursue other passions or improve their circumstances. The term can also be applied metaphorically to situations where individuals are deeply engrossed in a particular activity, sometimes to the detriment of other aspects of their lives. This might involve an obsession with a hobby, a cause, or even a relationship, where the individual's focus is so all-consuming that it resembles a form of involuntary servitude.
