Ensivälittäjäaineen, known more commonly in English as a primary neurotransmitter, refers to a chemical messenger that directly binds to a specific receptor on a postsynaptic neuron to initiate a signal. These substances are fundamental to synaptic transmission, the process by which neurons communicate with each other. When an electrical signal, an action potential, reaches the axon terminal of a presynaptic neuron, it triggers the release of these ensivälittäjäaineen into the synaptic cleft.

Upon entering the synaptic cleft, the ensivälittäjäaineen diffuse across the gap and bind to their corresponding receptors on the membrane of the postsynaptic neuron.
