Enhetsprofil

Enhetsprofil is a term used in Norwegian IT and data governance to describe a metadata record that represents a unit within an organization, such as a department, division, or agency. The profile standardizes how a unit is identified and described across information systems, enabling consistent data exchange and reporting.

The purpose of an enhetsprofil is to provide a stable reference for organizing, managing, and accessing information. It supports governance, compliance, and interoperability by ensuring that all systems refer to the same unit with a defined scope, responsibilities, and relationships. In practice, enhetsprofilers are used to link data from HR, finance, case management, and other systems to the corresponding organizational unit, aiding analytics, budgeting, and decision-making.

Typical content of an enhetsprofil includes a unique unit identifier, official name, parent unit, function or mandate, geographic location, and contact person. It may also specify scope of responsibilities, budgetary information, data domains or classifications associated with the unit, governance rules, data access permissions, and any integration endpoints or system ownership. Some profiles also record security roles, reporting lines, and external partners or stakeholders.

Enhetsprofil is commonly employed in public sector IT environments and large organizations to improve data quality, access control, and cross-system consistency. It helps in activities such as reporting by organizational unit, IAM-based access management, and cross-system data reconciliation.
