Enhedscellen is a Danish term that translates to "unit cell" in English. It is a fundamental concept in crystallography and materials science. A unit cell is the smallest repeating structural unit of a crystal lattice that, when translated in three dimensions, reconstructs the entire crystal. It essentially represents the basic building block of a crystal's structure. The dimensions and angles of the unit cell, along with the positions of atoms within it, define the overall symmetry and properties of the crystalline material. Understanding the unit cell is crucial for predicting and explaining macroscopic properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and optical behavior. Crystallographers use unit cells to describe and classify different crystal structures, which are categorized into seven crystal systems and 14 Bravais lattices.
