Engens

Engens is a small municipality and village in Verdania's Verdic Highlands. It covers an area of about 38 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 2,800 in 2021. The municipal government is headed by a mayor and a nine-member council, elected every four years.

Engens lies along the Engen River, with farmland and forests interspersed with gentle hills. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cool winters, and precipitation spread throughout the year.

The settlement dates back to the medieval period. The parish church, built in the 12th century, is a notable historic landmark. Engens grew through the centuries as a center for agriculture and local crafts. The modern municipality was formed in the 19th century during administrative reforms.

The local economy centers on dairy farming, crop production, and small-scale manufacturing, including wood products. The population is predominantly Verdani-speaking, with small communities speaking minority languages. Education and health services serve residents within the municipality and nearby towns.

Engens hosts an annual Harvest Festival and maintains several cultural associations. Landmarks include the 12th-century parish church, the Old Watermill, and the Engen Forest Reserve. The town is connected by a regional highway and is located near a rail line with stations in larger neighboring towns, providing residents access to larger cities.
