Engelberg

Engelberg is a municipality in the canton of Obwalden in central Switzerland. It is a traditional Alpine village and a major winter and summer tourist destination, situated in the Engelberg valley near Lake Lucerne and at the foot of Mount Titlis.

The village sits at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The surrounding Titlis massif includes a glacier that is accessible year round. A cable car system from Engelberg to the glacier, including the Rotair, one of the world’s first revolving cable cars, transports visitors to higher elevations and provides panoramic views.

History and culture are closely linked to Engelberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in the 12th century. The abbey remains central to the town’s religious and cultural life, with its church and historic library among the notable features.

Economy and transport: Tourism is the main economic activity, with skiing on Titlis in winter and hiking in summer. Engelberg is connected by the Luzern–Engelberg railway line to Lucerne and the broader Zentralbahn network, facilitating access for visitors and residents alike.
