It focuses on how a speaker self-regulates detail, scope, and meaning in the moment to reduce potential misinterpretation and to build communicative trust.

The term is a coined neologism in contemporary discourse analysis, intended to evoke a self-directed process of clarification. While it has not become a standardized label across all linguistic traditions, it appears in discussions of spoken interaction, intercultural communication, and human–machine dialogue as a way to analyze how speakers manage precision in real time. The concept is most often explored in relation to everyday conversation, instructional settings, and digital communication where misunderstandings can carry higher costs.

Core characteristics include metacognitive monitoring of one’s own utterances, explicit meta-commentary about the level of detail or certainty being conveyed, and voluntary reformulation or restatement. Enesetäpsustustena often involves explicit qualifiers (for example, “to be precise,” “in other words”), restatements with narrowed scope, and adjustments in pace, emphasis, or gesture to signal clarification to the listener.
