Enesekeskuslikkus, often translated as egocentricity or self-centeredness, refers to a tendency to view the world primarily from one's own perspective, with a diminished capacity to understand or consider the viewpoints of others. This concept is particularly relevant in developmental psychology, where it is often discussed in relation to early childhood. Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, for instance, describes egocentrism as a stage where children struggle to differentiate their own thoughts and feelings from those of others. They may assume that others share their knowledge, beliefs, and feelings.

As individuals mature, their capacity for decentration – the ability to take on another person's perspective – typically develops. However, egocentric tendencies can persist to varying degrees throughout life. In adulthood, enesekeskuslikkus can manifest as a lack of empathy, difficulty in interpersonal relationships, and a focus on personal needs and desires above those of others. It is important to distinguish between healthy self-esteem and a debilitating level of self-centeredness.
