Energiatsõhusus, or energy security, refers to the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price. It encompasses the reliability, accessibility, and sustainability of energy supplies to meet the needs of consumers, industries, and economies without causing significant disruptions. The concept emphasizes the importance of diversifying energy sources, ensuring stable supply chains, and maintaining resilience against external shocks such as geopolitical conflicts, natural disasters, or economic crises.

In the context of Estonia and the broader Baltic region, energy security has gained particular significance due to historical dependencies on external energy suppliers, primarily Russia. Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and subsequent energy-related tensions, the region has prioritized reducing reliance on Russian energy imports. This shift has involved investments in renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, as well as the development of interconnector projects to diversify supply routes and integrate regional energy markets.

Key components of energy security include energy efficiency, the development of alternative energy technologies, and the establishment of strategic reserves. Energy efficiency measures aim to reduce consumption and lower demand, while renewable energy projects help mitigate dependence on fossil fuels. Strategic reserves, such as stored fuel or backup power generation, provide a safety net during supply disruptions. Additionally, robust regulatory frameworks and international cooperation play a crucial role in ensuring long-term energy stability.

For Estonia, achieving energy security also involves strengthening regional cooperation with neighboring countries, such as Finland and Sweden, to create a more interconnected and resilient energy infrastructure. The European Union’s energy policies, including the Energy Union strategy, provide a framework for member states to align their efforts toward a secure, sustainable, and competitive energy system. Overall, energy security remains a dynamic and evolving challenge that requires continuous adaptation to changing geopolitical, economic, and technological conditions.
