Energiakaotusega, often translated as energy loss, refers to the dissipation of useful energy into less useful or unusable forms during a process or transfer. This is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics, particularly described by the second law, which states that in any natural thermodynamic process, the total entropy of an isolated system can only increase. This increase in entropy is directly related to the irreversible conversion of useful energy into heat.

In practical terms, energy loss occurs in various systems. For example, when electricity is transmitted through power lines, a portion of the electrical energy is converted into heat due to the resistance of the wires. In engines, not all the chemical energy of the fuel is converted into mechanical work; a significant amount is lost as heat through exhaust and friction. Similarly, in mechanical systems, friction between moving parts generates heat, reducing the efficiency of the system. Even in biological processes, such as metabolism, energy is lost as heat during the conversion of nutrients into usable energy for the organism.

Understanding and minimizing energy loss is crucial for improving efficiency in engineering, industry, and everyday life. This can involve using better insulation materials, optimizing machine designs to reduce friction, or developing more efficient energy conversion technologies. The concept highlights that 100% efficiency in energy transformations is generally unattainable due to inherent physical limitations.
