Energiakaasun

Energiakaasun is a term used in Finland to refer to various types of gaseous fuels used for energy purposes. It is not a single, specific substance but rather a broad category encompassing fuels like natural gas, biogas, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when they are utilized for heating, electricity generation, or as fuel for vehicles.

Natural gas, primarily composed of methane, is a common form of energiakaasun. It is typically transported via pipelines and used in industrial processes, power plants, and for residential heating. Biogas, on the other hand, is produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic matter such as agricultural waste, sewage sludge, and food scraps. It is considered a renewable energy source and can be used similarly to natural gas, sometimes after purification to remove impurities.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which consists of propane and butane, is another type of energiakaasun. LPG is stored and transported in liquid form under pressure and is often used in areas where natural gas pipelines are not available, such as for domestic heating, cooking, and as fuel for vehicles.

The utilization of energiakaasun contributes to the energy mix, offering alternatives to traditional fossil fuels like oil and coal. The specific type of energiakaasun used often depends on factors such as availability, cost, infrastructure, and environmental considerations. Finland has been actively exploring and promoting the use of various forms of energiakaasun as part of its renewable energy strategies and efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
