Once bound, the receptors and their associated ligands are concentrated into specific regions of the plasma membrane, often coated with proteins like clathrin, which then invaginize and pinch off to form a vesicle.

Other forms of endocytosis include caveolae-mediated endocytosis, which involves flask-shaped invaginations of the plasma membrane called caveolae, and clathrin-independent endocytosis, which bypasses the need for clathrin coating.
