Endorsements are public expressions of support for a person, product, service, policy, or organization, intended to influence the opinions or actions of others. They may come from individuals such as celebrities, experts, politicians, or ordinary users, as well as from organizations or media outlets. Endorsements differ from general advertising in that they are presented as testimony or recommendation, often with some perceived authority or credibility behind the statement.

Common forms include political endorsements, celebrity or influencer endorsements in marketing, expert endorsements in professional fields, and user endorsements such as ratings and testimonials. In corporate contexts, endorsements can enhance reputational capital, signal quality, or reassure buyers, while in politics they can mobilize voters or legitimize a candidate.

Endorsements operate through mechanisms of credibility, familiarity, and alignment with the audience’s values. Their effectiveness depends on source credibility, perceived objectivity, message relevance, and the degree of identification with the endorser. However, endorsements may backfire if perceptions of paid influence arise or if the endorser becomes implicated in a controversy.

Regulatory and ethical considerations are a key aspect. In many jurisdictions, disclosures are required for paid endorsements to reveal material connections between the endorser and the beneficiary.
