Historically, different processor architectures have favored different endianness. For instance, Motorola 68000 series processors and many network protocols use big-endian, while Intel x86 processors widely use little-endian. Modern systems often support both, allowing for flexibility.

When dealing with binary data, especially across networks or different machine architectures, it is crucial to be aware of endianness. Often, protocols or data formats specify a particular endianness (e.g., network byte order is typically big-endian) to ensure interoperability. Conversion routines are available in programming languages and libraries to swap byte order when necessary, enabling systems to correctly interpret data regardless of their native endianness. Understanding endianness is essential for low-level programming, network programming, and debugging data-related issues.
