Enantioomeerin

Enantioomeerin are a pair of stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. This property is analogous to a person's left and right hands, which are mirror images but cannot be perfectly aligned. In chemistry, enantiomers arise when a molecule contains a chiral center, typically a carbon atom bonded to four different groups. The arrangement of these four groups in space leads to two possible configurations, which are the enantiomers. These molecules have identical physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, and solubility, except for their interaction with plane-polarized light.

One of the key distinctions between enantiomers is their optical activity. They rotate plane-polarized light in opposite directions. One enantiomer will rotate the light clockwise (designated as d- or +), while the other will rotate it counterclockwise (designated as l- or -). This phenomenon is known as optical rotation. In biological systems, enantiomers can exhibit vastly different effects. Enzymes and receptors in living organisms are often chiral themselves, meaning they can interact differently with each enantiomer. This can lead to one enantiomer being biologically active or even therapeutic, while the other may be inactive or even toxic, as famously seen with thalidomide. The study and synthesis of specific enantiomers are crucial in pharmaceuticals and other fields where stereochemistry plays a vital role.
