Emészthetetlenség, a Hungarian term, translates to indigestibility or the inability to be digested. It primarily refers to substances that the body's digestive system cannot break down into absorbable nutrients. This can apply to both food components and other ingested materials.

In the context of diet, emészthetetlenség often relates to dietary fiber. While beneficial for digestive health, certain types of fiber are not fully digested by human enzymes and pass through the digestive tract largely intact. This indigestibility is crucial for promoting bowel regularity and feeding beneficial gut bacteria. However, an excessive intake of certain indigestible carbohydrates can lead to discomfort such as bloating and gas.

Beyond food, the term can also describe the indigestibility of non-food items that might be accidentally swallowed. These objects, if not capable of being broken down, can cause serious digestive issues, including blockages. Medical intervention is often required in such cases. The concept highlights the limitations of biological digestive processes and the importance of consuming appropriately digestible materials.
