Emrat

Emrat is an Albanian word that literally translates to “the names” in English. It is the definite plural form of emër, the noun for “name.” In Albanian grammar, the base noun emër has four common forms: emër (name, the name when not definite), emri (the name), emra (names, the names when indefinite), and emrat (the names, the names when definite). The definite form is typically used with postposed articles, so emri means “the name” and emrat means “the names.”

In everyday use, emrat appears when discussing names in general or when referring to a known set of names. For example, one might say, “Emrat e fëmijëve janë regjistruar,” meaning “The names of the children have been registered,” or “Kjo është lista me emrat,” meaning “this is the list with the names.” The term also functions as a basic building block in linguistic and onomastic discussions about how Albanian marks definiteness and plurality in semantic domains related to naming.
