Empregas

Empregas is a term that can appear as the plural of emprego in some contexts, but the standard Portuguese usage for jobs is emprego (singular) and empregos (plural). The form empregas also exists as a conjugation of the verb empregar in the second person singular present indicative (tu empregas or você emprega). Because of this, when discussing employment as a concept in Portuguese, it is common to use emprego or empregos to avoid ambiguity.

An emprego, or job, refers to a paid position in which a person provides labor or services to an employer or client. It involves a relationship of work, with duties defined by the position, compensation in exchange for work, and a set of rules regarding hours, performance, and conduct governed by law or agreement. Jobs can vary widely in scope, security, and requirements, and they are a central element of the labor market.

Types of employment commonly encountered include full-time and part-time arrangements, temporary or contract work, freelance or independent work, and internships or traineeships. Legal frameworks in Lusophone countries regulate employment through labor codes, contracts, and various protections for workers. In Portugal, this is largely through the Código do Trabalho; in Brazil, through the Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho, among others. These frameworks address hiring, termination, working hours, wages, and workers’ rights.
