Emporio

Emporio is a traditional village on the Greek island of Santorini. It is located in the southern part of the island, inland from the popular beaches of Perissa and Kamari, and is known for its preserved townscape and quieter atmosphere compared with the caldera towns.

The village’s core feature is the Kasteli, a Venetian-era fortress perched on a hill that historically controlled access to the island’s interior. Emporio developed around this fortress and is organized along a maze of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses in two main sectors: Ano Emporio (Upper) and Kato Emporio (Lower), connected by stone stairways. The architecture blends Cycladic elements with the rugged landscape, and several churches with distinctive domes and towers punctuate the streets.

Cultural and economic life in Emporio reflects its dual heritage of history and agriculture. The surrounding terraces and vineyards contribute to Santorini’s wine tradition, notably Assyrtiko and the island’s dessert wine, Vinsanto. Tourism has grown alongside local craft and dining offerings, but Emporio remains a living village that offers a more intimate experience of island life and history than the busier caldera towns.

Access is by road from Fira, the island’s main town, or via local bus services. Despite tourism, Emporio retains a sense of village life and serves as a gateway to other southern Santorini sights, including nearby beaches, wine cellars, and traditional pathways through the countryside.
