Emphasisregarding is a coined term in discourse studies used to describe a rhetorical and pragmatic effect in which emphasis is placed on the matter introduced by the preposition regarding, or on the stance toward a subject framed by that preposition. The concept treats regarding not only as a simple topical marker but as a focal element that can carry attitudinal or evidential weighting in communication.

The phenomenon can appear in two broad forms. In written and spoken language, syntactic topicalization uses constructions such as “Regarding X, …” or “As for X, …” to foreground X as the subject of attention. In addition, prosodic or syntactic emphasis may highlight the word regarding itself or the ensuing noun phrase, signaling the speaker’s stance or the perceived relevance of the topic. Examples include sentences where the phrase beginning with regarding introduces a domain of concern, and where the emphasis shifts interpretive salience to that domain.

Functions attributed to emphasisregarding include signaling topic boundaries, framing the scope of discussion, and conveying stance or degree of concern about the subject. It interacts with other discourse devices such as topic-comment structures, frame markers, and stance markers, and can affect reader or listener interpretation by guiding focus and perceived importance.
