Empfangsebene

Empfangsebene is a term used in German and Austrian telecommunications to describe a level or layer of a telecommunications network. This term was previously used in the German and Austrian telecommunication sector, particularly in the context of the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) standards.

The Empfangsebene represents a layer of a telecommunications network, positioned below the transport layer and above the network layer in the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) seven-layer model. This layer deals with interface issues and the transfer of data between devices, handling packet forwarding, routing, and communication protocols.

In the context of the German and Austrian telecommunications network, Empfangsebene was previously used alongside the older CEN/TS 15001 and VPI/1.0 Layering model. However, the use of this term declined with the adoption of the OSI framework in the 1990s.

In the current EU framework and standards, the Empfangsebene layer no longer exists, having been assimilated into the OSI model. The OSI model has become widely accepted as the standard for network communication architecture.

Besides its historical significance, the term remains a point of interest for experts researching telecommunications history and legacy systems. Similar to the changes seen in CEN/TS 15001, the decommissioning of the Empfangsebene layer has led to a more modern, European-standardized telecommunications infrastructure.
