Empathie, often translated as "Einfühlungsvermögen" or "Mitgefühl," refers to the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. It involves perceiving another's emotions, thoughts, and feelings and then conveying that understanding. There are broadly two main types of empathy: cognitive empathy and affective empathy. Cognitive empathy is the ability to understand another person's perspective or mental state without necessarily sharing their emotions. Affective empathy, on the other hand, involves feeling or sharing the emotions of another person. This can manifest as vicarious emotional responses, where one's own emotional state mirrors that of the person they are empathizing with.
The development of empathy is a complex process influenced by both biological and environmental factors. It
