Emitto

Emitto is a Latin verb meaning to send forth, emit, or discharge. It is formed from the prefix e- meaning out, together with mitto “to send.” In dictionaries it is given with the principal parts emitto, emittere, emisi, emissus, and it belongs to the third conjugation. The infinitive is emittere, the present active indicative forms include emittō, emittis, emittit, emittimus, emittitis, emittunt, and the supine is emissum. The perfect active is emisi, and the perfect passive participle is emissus.

In classical Latin, emitto is used for releasing or sending something outward, whether a physical object, a signal, or a metaphorical release. Examples could include emitting light, sound, or smoke, or sending forth messages or troops, depending on context. The verb appears in poetry, prose, and technical writing, often with idiomatic phrases that emphasize outward projection or discharge.

The root and its meanings have given rise to several English derivatives. The verb emit, the noun emission, the nouns emitter and emissive, and the noun emissary all trace back to emitto or its related mitto family.
