Elpárologtatás, also known as evaporation, is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gaseous phase. This process happens at temperatures below the boiling point of the liquid. Evaporation is a fundamental physical process driven by the kinetic energy of the molecules within the liquid. Molecules at the surface that possess sufficient energy can overcome the intermolecular forces holding them in the liquid state and escape into the surrounding atmosphere as gas.

Several factors influence the rate of evaporation. Temperature plays a significant role; higher temperatures increase the kinetic energy of molecules, leading to faster evaporation. Surface area is also crucial; a larger surface area exposed to the atmosphere allows more molecules to escape. Humidity, which is the amount of water vapor already present in the air, affects evaporation as well. High humidity means the air is already saturated with vapor, slowing down the rate at which more liquid can evaporate into it. Air movement, such as wind, also enhances evaporation by carrying away the vapor molecules from the surface, thereby reducing local humidity and encouraging further evaporation.

Elpárologtatás is a vital process in many natural phenomena, including the water cycle, where water evaporates from oceans, lakes, and rivers to form clouds. It also has numerous practical applications. For instance, it is used in industrial processes like drying, desalination, and the production of salt. In everyday life, we observe evaporation when clothes dry on a line or when puddles disappear after rain. The cooling effect associated with evaporation is also notable; as energetic molecules escape, the remaining liquid cools down, a principle utilized in sweating for thermoregulation.
