Ellipsigalaksit

Ellipsigalaksit, often referred to as elliptical galaxies, are a major class of galaxy that are generally smooth, nearly featureless, and exhibit a shape resembling an ellipse or a sphere. They are one of the three main morphological types of galaxy, alongside spiral and irregular galaxies.

These galaxies are characterized by their lack of prominent spiral arms and a relatively low amount of interstellar gas and dust compared to spiral galaxies. Consequently, they typically contain older stellar populations, with fewer young, blue stars. The stars within elliptical galaxies tend to move in more random orbits, unlike the organized rotation observed in the disks of spiral galaxies.

The size of elliptical galaxies can vary enormously, from dwarf ellipticals containing only a few million stars to giant ellipticals that can host trillions of stars and span millions of light-years across. Their formation is thought to be the result of galaxy mergers. When two or more galaxies collide and merge, the violent gravitational interactions can disrupt any existing spiral structures and mix the stellar populations, often leading to the formation of an elliptical galaxy. Giant ellipticals are often found at the centers of galaxy clusters, suggesting they may grow by accreting smaller galaxies.
