Elimineerimine

Elimineerimine is a term used to describe the process of removing or excluding elements from a system. In Estonian, Dutch and related languages, the word translates to elimination and is used across disciplines to denote a change of state achieved by removal.

In mathematics and logic, elimination refers to methods for removing variables or quantifiers to obtain relations among the remaining variables. Gaussian elimination solves linear systems by row operations that cancel variables. In algebraic geometry, elimination theory studies removing variables to derive equations in a subset of variables; resultants are common tools in this area.

In chemistry, elimination reactions remove a small molecule from a substrate to form a multiple bond. They proceed via E1 or E2 mechanisms, often following rules of regioselectivity such as Zaitsev's rule. Typical examples include the dehydration of alcohols to alkenes and the dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides.

In public health and policy, elimination denotes reducing the incidence of a disease to zero in a defined geographic area, with ongoing surveillance to prevent reestablishment. This use is distinct from eradication, which aims for zero transmission globally.
