Eligierans

Eligierans are an indigenous ethnic group native to the Eligir Basin and surrounding uplands in the eastern foothills of the continent of Iralia. Their historical homeland includes river valleys, terraced fields, and hillside settlements organized around small-scale agriculture and forest resources. Population estimates vary, with communities concentrated in rural districts and several urban centers through migration.

They speak Eligieran, a language of the local branch of the Iralian language family, with many speakers also fluent in the national language. Efforts to preserve the language include bilingual schooling and community cultural programs.

Historically, Eligierans trace their presence in the region to ancient times, forming loose clan-based networks that traded with neighboring groups. In the colonial and early state era, they faced land pressures and assimilation policies, later seeking recognition of land rights and cultural autonomy within the national framework.

Society centers on kinship groups and councils of respected elders. Traditional crafts include weaving, pottery, and carved wood; music and dance accompany harvests, rites of passage, and communal gatherings. While many practices remain, contemporary Eligierans engage with public life, education, and modern labor markets.

Economically, they rely on agriculture, forest-based products, and handicrafts, with growing involvement in ecotourism and regional markets. Politically, they participate through regional councils and elected representatives, while cultural institutions promote language education, archiving oral history, and preservation of sacred sites.
