Elevation-related is an adjectival term used to describe data, analyses, and phenomena tied to height above a reference surface. In geographic contexts, this typically refers to the vertical position of a point on the Earth's surface relative to a reference datum, such as the geoid (mean sea level) for orthometric height, or the reference ellipsoid for ellipsoidal height. The difference between ellipsoidal and orthometric height is the geoid undulation, N, where h equals ellipsoidal height and H equals orthometric height, and N = h − H. Elevation-related concepts are central to the study of topography, hydrology, and geodesy.

Elevation data are produced and stored in digital elevation models (DEMs), point clouds from LiDAR, and various raster formats. Common global products include SRTM-based DEMs and NASA’s SRTM-derived datasets, ASTER GDEM, and the newer NASADEM; local accuracy is often higher with airborne LiDAR. Vertical accuracy depends on datum, terrain, and data source, and errors may arise from vegetation, water surfaces, and sensor limitations. Consistent vertical datums and careful datum transformations are essential for reliable comparisons across datasets; converting between orthometric heights and ellipsoidal heights requires a geoid model, such as EGM96 or EGM2008.

Applications include geographic information systems analysis, watershed and flood modeling, urban planning and construction, infrastructure design, and aviation and navigation. Elevation-related considerations also intersect climate science, geology, and ecology, where elevation influences temperature, precipitation, and habitat distribution. Ongoing challenges include datum standardization, upgrading legacy data, and maintaining accurate vertical references amid sea-level change.
