Eleusa

Eleusa, also known as Eleousa (Greek: ἐλεούσα), is a canonical type of icon in Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox religious art. The term derives from the Greek eleos (mercy, compassion) with the suffix -ousa, yielding "the Merciful" or "the Tender."

In the Eleusa type, the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus lean their heads toward each other so that their cheeks touch. They gaze outward in a compassionate, intimate mood. The Virgin often holds Jesus, while his hand may reach toward her or gently bless the viewer. The overall effect emphasizes maternal tenderness and mutual trust rather than regal authority.

The Eleusa is one of the major Theotokos (Virgin) iconographic types, alongside others like Hodegetria and Orans. It appears across Byzantine, Greek, Russian, and Balkan art, in frescoes and panel paintings, from medieval monasteries to late medieval and early modern churches. Numerous icons survive in monasteries on Mount Athos, in Russian icon collections, and in churches throughout the Orthodox world.

Iconographic program often uses gold ground, tender features, soft lines, and modest color symbolism to convey mercy and consolation. The Eleusa remains a popular devotional image, symbolizing the compassionate care of Mary for humanity.
